To save space in your warehouse or store, run your pallet racks and/or shelving in the same direction as the flow of goods or materials. Try not to have them perpendicular to each other because you wind up with dead space where they intersect.
Do a layout on cross hatched paper from an office supply store (where you can make each square equal to one foot or two feet and then you will have everything to scale) and show where your doors are for receiving product and doors for shipping. Then draw a line from your receiving doors to the back of the warehouse and out to the shipping doors.
This is the “line of flow” and is the line for your storage racks and shelving to follow. Of course there are exceptions for good reasons, but the closer you adhere to your line of flow the more space you will have, and the least amount of lost time.
